Urdu

mujhse pehli si mohabbat, mere mehboob, na mang.

main ne samjha tha ke tu hai, to darakhshaan hai hayaat;
tera gham hai to gham-e-dahr ka jhagra kya hai?
teri surat se hai alam mein bahaaroon ko sabat,
teri aankhon ke siwa dunya mein rakha kya hai?

to jo miljae to taqdir nigun ho jae.
yun na tha, main ne faqat chaha tha yun ho jae;
aur bhi dukh hain zamane mein mohabbat ke siwa,
rahatein aur bhi han vasl ki rahat ke siwa.

an-ginat sadiyon ke tarik bahmenaana tilism
resham-o-atlas-o-kamkhaab mein bunwaaye hue,
ja-ba-ja bikte hue kucha-o-bazaar mein jism,
khak mein lithre hue, khun mein nehlaye hue.

laut jati hai udhar ko bhi nazar, kya kijiye?
ab bhi dil-kash hai tera husn, magar kya kijiye?
aur bhi dukh hain zamane mein mohabbat ke siwa,
rahatein aur bhi hain vasl ki rahat ke siwa.

mujhse pehli si mohabbat, mere mehboob, na mang.

English

do not ask from me, my love, for that love again.

I had thought that since you existed, so all existence shone;
grief for me was you; so why bother with the world’s grief?
your beauty gave earth's springtimes permanence;
is there anything left in the world, besides your eyes?

if you were to become mine, fate would be humbled.
it was not so, I had only wished it to be so.
there are other sufferings in the world besides love,
there are other pleasures besides the pleasures of union.

the dread dark spell of countless centuries
woven with silk and satin and gold lace,
bodies sold everywhere, in streets and marketplaces,
smeared with dust, bathed in blood.

those sights return to haunt me: what can I do?
your beauty is still charming: but what can I do?
there are other sufferings in the world besides love,
there are other pleasures besides the pleasures of union.

do not ask from me, my love, for that love again.
